The Artisan Object: A Chance for This World, a Gift for Us
By Thierry Forbois
Our consumerist society celebrates the relentless production of disposable objects, or those whose lack of quality predestines them to failure. Social clichés, the tyranny of trends, and a culture of scarcity condition us to consume for the sake of consuming—often for a fleeting moment of gratification or to numb, however briefly, the anxiety of existing in a reality whose meaning eludes us a little more each day. Beyond the obvious degradation of natural environments and wildlife caused by this orgy of consumption, it is our very humanity that stands at risk: mechanical labor, exploitative working conditions often bordering on slavery, the perversion of human connections, and the alienation of our physical, psychological, and spiritual health.
While necessity forces many to overlook the quality of goods, their origins, or the conditions under which they were produced, too often we turn a blind eye during a purchase for the hollow satisfaction of finding a “great deal,” or to satisfy a desire carefully planted in our minds by skilled marketers. In doing so, we become not just the victims of the ailments we suffer from, but also their unwitting agents.
The love of craft, precision, integrity, the pursuit of elegance and durability—these principles inherent to the ideal of artisanal craftsmanship, guarantors of the highest quality, hold transformative potential. They can enhance our quality of life and ensure the natural renewal and preservation of the Earth’s resources.
At Arakuto, we embody this ideal in every culinary altar we create. These altars are not mere surfaces for cooking but works of art designed to endure for generations. They represent a philosophy of respect: respect for the tree sacrificed to yield their wood, respect for the artisanal know-how handed down through centuries, respect for nature and the bonds it weaves among us.
I believe in the power of objects shaped by an artisan’s hands to bring meaning to our lives by adding their original beauty and a sense of the sacred, helping us cultivate what is real—or as Pagnol so aptly put it, “de l’authentique!” Today, more than ever, the artisanal ideal is a revolutionary and humanist path. It enriches the lives of those who find fulfillment in the joyful pursuit of mastering their craft, and it re-enchants the everyday for those whose lives are touched by the unique light and soul of artisanal objects.
Every time we—within our means—choose to support artisanal excellence, we contribute to the beauty and vitality of this world and help usher in a more thoughtful and just society. By choosing an Arakuto culinary altar, you are not just acquiring an object: you are joining a mission. A mission of preservation, transmission, and celebration of what human hands can achieve at their very best.

2.5. Production and Availability — Arakuto culinary altars are produced continuously, with a complete fabrication process requiring 100 days. The online store displays, in real-time, the number of days remaining before the next altar is ready for shipment. For example, a customer selecting a "Pegasus" model in the "Intimate" size may see 35 days remaining until the altar is ready for shipping. If no altar of the selected model and size is in production, the displayed timeline will default to 100 days. Once an altar has reached maturity, a 7-day preparation period is required for final touches, including the "Kigoroshi" ritual, application of linseed oil, and the Cure balm. No altar will display a timeline of fewer than 7 days to ensure this final preparation phase is completed meticulously.

At Arakuto, our respect for the lives of the trees felled to create our culinary altars transcends conventional notions of sustainability. For us, the sacrifice of a tree is a sacred act—one that demands profound reverence and an unwavering sense of responsibility. This deep conviction guides every decision we make.
The hard maple wood (Acer saccharum) that forms the body of each Arakuto altar is of the finest grade and FSC-certified, ensuring it is responsibly sourced from forests in the United States and Canada. This certification guarantees that the wood we select upholds the balance and vitality of these ecosystems. To craft the constellations inlaid upon the altar’s surface, we chose reclaimed American black walnut (Juglans nigra), breathing new life into this noble material.
Each altar is treated with three coats of polymerized linseed oil—solvent-free and zero VOC—and protected with Cure Balm, a blend of 100% organic ingredients. These thoughtful measures not only enhance the durability and beauty of every piece but also minimize its ecological footprint.
By creating altars designed to endure for generations, we honor the life-sacrifice of the tree from which it comes. Each Arakuto altar stands as a testament to the timeless connection between humanity and the natural world, celebrating the sacred beauty of life.
